Morning Roundup: 7/7/11

-First and most importantly yesterday was my Birthday. 26 years young! Happy Birthday to me! I had a couple nice glasses of scotch and a nice dinner with my lady friend. Great evening. Also…she bought me a box of cards. Review coming later this week.

-This little kid pulls a card worth approximately $5k after manhandling a box of chrome with all the tenderness of a physical assault.

-Panini has learned from their mistakes. Timeless Treasures football appears to have the RC’s signed on leather with ballpoint pen rather than marker. A lot of the autographs from the Basketball set of 10-11 are already fading/bleeding.

-Big Sale Report: $10,350 for this card. If I had that much cash to blow I’d outbid them. Such a cool card.

-Statistical Standout :  Tampa Bay AA Pitcher Matt Moore went 7 IP giving up 1 H, 1 ER and striking out 10. His season ERA now sits at 2.14.

-Joe Mauer will return and play 1B today. Hopefully he gets into mid-season form very soon. His RC values should see a bit of a boost as this season his cards and play have been met with skepticism thus far.

-Panini released a comprehensive checklist of all 86 RC variations in their upcoming Score Football release. I love base card variations and love RC variations even more. This ought to be a fun set to collect. I hope some are short printed. UPDATE: Panini Rep Tracy Hackler was kind enough to respond on twitter saying that “All of the secondary variations are pretty SP’d.” Awesome!

-Leaf cards gave Beckett.com a preview of the cards they’ll be giving away at the National Convention. I’m not into them….maybe someone else is?

- Prince Fielder’s quest for the MVP gets another boost as he is named NL player of the month for June. I prefer his 2002 Prospect Premieres autograph. How about everyone else? He has cards labeled RC in about five different years.

-News of the legend of Kobayashi eating 69 dogs on the same day that Joey Chestnut won the annual 4th of July contest has spread quickly. Chestnut replied by saying he has eaten 71 in practice before so the 69 scarfed down by Kobayashi done simultaneous to the competition he is holding out from because of a contract dispute (seriously) is not that impressive. Frankly I find this entire thing hilarious and the fact that there is drama surrounding contracts and who is better is fantastic. Keep on keepin’ on eaters.

- Albert Pujols was activated from the DL yesterday and was available to pinch hit last night. The return comes much sooner than most fans and the team even expected. The legend continues to grow for “The Machine”.

Big Sale Report: $5,000 for an Exquisite Auto Patch RC Gold Parallel /35 of Kevin Durant on Monday night.

Statistical Standout of the Night: Dan Haren threw a 2-hit shutout to beat Justin Verlander in a 1-0 win last night. A complete game and 9 K’s gives Haren a bit of retribution for his All-Star snub.

10 cards per can, most of the time the can was more valuable than the cards. A few inserts held some value with the Diamond Edition parallel being the chase cards. Diamond Edition were die cut and foil boarded to perfection…well sort of.

The above Randy Johnson, god bless that hair, is posted up for sale at $25 currently. Probably a bit high but still an example of some sort of value retained by this set.

Pinnacle Inside is obscure enough that BaseballCardPedia which is an up and coming site (for baseball only) to get info on old sets doesn’t even have it listed! Inside had a few other inserts and a lower level of parallel named Club Edition but other than that the baseball version had little to offer. The football version had autographs to chase but they were extremely scarce and hand signed….ahhh the good old days.

Grading Guru: A FCB Redux

I did a write-up for Freedom Cardboard, the best sports card experience online complete with forums, a blog and a very well priced shop selling the newest and best boxes around. Here is the article in full. You can also read it here.

AS SEEN ON WWW.FREEDOMCARDBOARD.COM

A guide to deciding whether or not to grade your modern cards. I would like to emphasize the word modern. I am not a vintage card expert and probably never will be. Now that you understand you should look elsewhere for guidance concerning your older pieces of cardboard gold it’s time to complete this eight step process to grading excellence.

Step 1: The eyeball test
Give your card a once over. If you can already tell the centering is off, it has scratches, or a corner is dinged….throw it in the “no way” pile.
Step 2: Check the card over with a loupe
Yes it may seem too nerdy for even the nerdiest of souls but don’t let that bother you. Get one of these for roughly $5 on ebay. I suggest buying one at auction to get the lowest price. I would also suggest at least a 25-30x magnifying loupe and an LED light is a plus. It sounds like a lot but mine cost $6 after shipping. I have read that Beckett Graders use a 10x magnifying loupe so if your card can pass inspection with a 30x it should be in very good shape.  Check the cards over again paying special attention to surface, edges and corners. Any of them that make you cringe multiple times should go in the “no way” pile.
Step 3: Measure centering if possible
This is not all that difficult to do. Make sure the card is in a sleeve or card saver and get a ruler out to measure the centering. For cards that have a full photo front just give it an eyeball and see what you think. Most of the time full photo fronts won’t get less than a 9 or 9.5 for centering. For cards with borders you can expect about a .5 grade reduction in centering per 1/16 of an inch it is off for the top to bottom and side to side on both the front and the back. That may be a little harsh but when you’re considering upping your investment in a card to get it graded you need to be overly pessimistic about it’s grading potential for the best results.
Step 4: Check the population report
Check the relevant population report for your card and whomever you are submitting to. PSA reports are not free so you may need to find someone who could look one up for you. The FreedomCardboard Forums are a great place to start. You can find Beckett Grading Services reports here (you will need a free Beckett account). If a card has more than 70% Gem mint or better grades on submissions that means the chances are pretty high of you getting a good grade. It also means you need to pay extra attention to step #5.
Step 5: Compare auction prices for your card in various grades
Obviously if you are holding a red refractor #’d to 5 you may have a tough time finding prices to look at of similar cards. However it is worth noting that on a card that rare the value may not see too much of a boost for getting a gem mint grade. For cards not as rare you can search ebay completed listings to give you a better idea of how much of a premium you can expect if your card comes back at a certain grade. Many times this will discourage you from grading a card that is in great shape simply because you would only realize a $3-4 gain over the raw price and it would cost you $7-10 to get it graded. The lesson here is even if the card is in fantastic shape you should not always get it graded. Even if the item is for your personal collection it is not worth it. If a raw card sells for $4 and is $10 in gem mint you should just buy the gem mint and sell your raw. It isn’t worth the chance of paying to get it graded and possibly not even getting the gem mint grade you were hoping for.
Step 6: Prediction time!
Not only is this fun but especially for BGS submissions this can be useful. For example you have a card that you want to get graded pretty badly so you may be inclined to get it graded even if your inspections are telling you no. Write out your predictions for each aspect of the grading: Center, Corners, Surface and Edges. Remember that your card can never get a grade more than .5 higher than the lowest subgrade. So if you predict your surface with only get you an 8.5 your chances of 9.5 are very slim. Predictions should really help you thin out your possible submissions.
Step 7: Submit!
Now that you have narrowed the playing field by quite a bit it’s time to pick how you will submit. There are a ton of options for both grading services but one of the best options out there is the Group submission run by FCB member masonphillip. Find out all about the group BGS submissions here.
Step 8: Record your results and compare to predictions
Give yourself an idea of how much you can truly trust your predictions and what areas you may not be very good at examining. Don’t judge yourself too harshly until you have a sizable sample though. Until you have submitted 50 cards or more don’t get too discouraged with your grading talent. Remember to have fun also, this is a hobby after all!

2002-03 UD Glass Auto Focus Autographs
Not only were the Auto Focus cards amazing to look at but they also had some of the greatest autograph checklists NBA cards have ever seen once 2004-05 and 2005-06 rolled out UD Trilogy Auto Focus sets. No disrespect to the obvious leaders like Topps Fan Favorites and Upper Deck Legends sets. The Auto Focus sets were littered with a lot of worthless rookies that now a few years later might as well be in a trash can. (I’m talking to you Sean May and Wayne Simien) Also…how in the hell did Keyon Dooling make this checklist? Very strange.

Check out this checklist in 2005-06:

A few of those SP’s should be super SP’s like Pippen and Ming but it’s balanced out by the J.R. Smith that few would consider short printed.

2011 Topps Allen & Ginter

2011 Topps Allen & Ginter

John McEnroe is all I needed to see to get geeked about Allen & Ginter again this year. Last year’s autograph checklist was a little soft when it came to non baseball autographs but this year between Mac and Manny Pacquiao there is sure to be even more busting and chasing than we usually see with A&G. They ahve completely revamped the auto checklist with the aforementioned members as well as Dick Vitale, Sue Bird, Kristi Yamaguchi, Stan Lee, Lou Holtz and Jim Nantz. Pretty interesting names that you certainly won’t find in many, if any, other products.

Crack the code, don’t crack the code…I don’t really care. The code thing has never gotten me all hot and bothered and it that’s not about to change this year. You have to bust too much of this stuff to even get the cards to help you crack the code. Some collector’s go nuts for this stuff, I’m not one of those collectors.

Of course Rip cards are back bringing plenty of value to the product as well as plenty of fortune and misfortune to those deciding whether or not to rip or sell their new found lottery ticket. The usual “new” inserts this year include animals, flowers and other stuff I don’t care about but master set collectors will drool over. The “Minds Tthat Made the Future” set is a pretty cool concept though. N43, Ginter codes, Box Loaders and mini parallels pack the same punch they always have.

This year’s DNA card being touted is that of Geronimo the long time Apache Indian leader. As usual this one will bring huge cash when it gets pulled or if it gets pulled at all. Ginter’s production run with so many parallels must be through the roof. It gets bought up in such bulk amounts but never seems to run dry which is definitely cause for concern.

A Hobby box will get you three hits, maybe more if you’re lucky but expect at least two of them to be framed memorabilia pieces and often times all three will be memorabilia. This will be a hot product out of the gate and usually has a solid month or two of staying power before prices begin to really fade badly on the more common SP’s, inserts and SP’s memorabilia. SP Autographs, rip cards, and parallels wills stay strong probably until the next A&G is released. That’s part of the fun of ripping this product. You never know if the Bazooka back mini you just pulled is going to fetch $50.

The price point is about the same as past years in the $85-100 range per box. Unlike other products you can never really bank on the price falling and picking it up later at a cheaper price so if you want this stuff you might as well get it as soon as you can. Last year’s A&G is still in the $85-95 range and so is the 2009 wax.

sexy teen girls 12 You lost your camera, we found it (20 Photos)
You’re going to want to keep her happy.

To make this product even more fun this is the only proven product my girlfriend will stay interested in. She likes opening any product but this is the only one she truly examines the cards and enjoys seeing pack after pack.

With a release date of July 13th get ready for some fun. I’ll be busting at least one box on my blog.

Paul Goldschmidt Bowman Chrome Autos and Parallels

Paul Goldschmidt Bowman Chrome Autos and Parallels
Price Range: Base $35-50, Gold $400-500, Orange $800-900
Why it matters: Goldschmidt was never a super highly touted prospect. An 8th round pick in 2009 belted 35 HR’s in 2010 and was immediately on everyone’s radar. His first autographed chrome cards came out this season in Bowman and I think has caught quite a few people by surprise with the values it has realized. Prices have been on the rise again this season as he is currently slapping a HR every 11-12 AB’s with a .315 average in the Southern League (AA).
Outlook: Comparisons are all over the map with this guy. Some say Ryan Howard, some say Ryan Shealy, but I’m confident with a prediction somewhere in between. I think he will be serviceable in the field an above average at the plate. I would expect his average to drop quite a bit as he advances and but the HR’s will be there. The real question will be how much his average drops.Last season in A+ ball he struck out once every 3.26 AB’s. Is that because he was outmatched? Most of the time no. He had some issues with swinging for the fence every time but supposedly he doesn’t have that bad of discipline. He has cleaned it up a bit this season and is close to a 1:1 K:BB ratio which scouts love to see especially from a guy with this powerband. As for the potential of his cards I certainly wouldn’t recommend picking up the highly volatile rarer parallels but at less than $40 per it may be wise to pick up a few to see if this one can climb to closer to $80 at time of callup and $100 if he does well in his debut week.
